Give It Forward: YMCA of Greater Boston
We’re back on board after a crazy holiday season to finish up our Feed 10,00 Families Give it Forward (GIF) Initiative with Turner Broadcasting Insider’s Advantage and Boston Market.
Before Christmas, we were able to deliver Give it Forward cards to three Atlanta-based transitional housing programs (read about those here, here, and here) so that families could enjoy a hot, healthy meal out with their families.
We are now sending cards to other parts of the country that have extreme needs for transitional housing. We have identified some amazing programs that are helping to meet those needs! This week, we were privileged to send 25 Boston Market Give it Forward cards to the YMCA of Greater Boston’s Families in Transition program. They are a residence to 22 families and are also home to the Huntington House, a permanent housing program for 66 individuals that have transitioned out of homelessness.
Families in Transition is also home to the McLaughlin House that provides lodging to 10 families who are in recovery from histories of substance abuse. While this is the main focus of McLaughin House, all of these programs offer supportive services, advocacy, and recovery. David Tavares, Associate Director of Housing, put it best,
“It is a positive and dignified place where individuals and families receive assistance to build and create something positive and productive out of unenviable situations. Better stated, we are a road upon which the downtrodden and disenfranchised can travel in their efforts to not only obtain adequate and affordable housing, but to also resuscitate hope, resurrect dreams, and enjoy fulfilling lives.”
