Feed 10,000 Families Wrap up: Out of Darkness
Through a partnership with Turner Broadcasting Insider’s Advantage program and Boston Market, we have completed an initiative through our nonprofit branch RAISE Hope called Feed 10,000 Families. For this initiative, we had a launch at Turner and invited employees and their friends and families to buy Boston Market gift cards.
Normally, Turner employees get gift cards and other products at a discounted rate and can buy them for family and friends. But this year, the Turner family decided to do things a little differently and was generous enough to donate the cards to families living in homeless and domestic violence shelters all around the country. Read about our past gifts here.
For our last batch of Give it Forward cards, we ended back at home in Atlanta where we started. We gave 20 cards to Out of Darkness, a local nonprofit in that fights against sex trafficking and prostitution in Atlanta. Atlanta is the largest hub for sex trafficking and has one of the largest sex industries in the nation.
Out of Darkness is comprised of three different missions: Reach, Rescue, and Restore. To Reach the ladies, they started Princess Night – a weekly program in which volunteers go out onto the streets and hand out roses and messages of love to women on the street. Sometimes rescues happen right there, but mostly they just provide the women with encouragement and love. Out of Darkness also performs rescues in which women are picked up off the street and safely transported to the safe house where they are out of danger. From there, they stay at the safe house for anywhere from a week to a month, while the OOD staff works on transitioning them into a long term program.
At the safe house, the residents are given time to sleep for the first few days and then begin a schedule that facilitates normal sleeping patterns and quiet time. Volunteers often come to the shelter to partake in Bible study, do crafts, cook together, take the ladies to lunch or on a walk, etc. Our cards will be used for the ladies at the safe house to have a special treat during their stay. We’re so honored to be a part of this incredible mission in Atlanta!
